Tort simply means a civil wrong, and this book explores the law of tortious civil wrongs. There are many torts, from Negligence to nuisance, making the subject fascinating, disparate, pragmatic and sometimes inconsistent. Above all, tort law has relevance to everyday life and is therefore essential for all lawyers in training, regardless of whether they intend, ultimately, to practise in this area.

Published in association with BARBRI, a global leader in legal education, Tort Law is aimed at students on LLB and law conversion (MA/PgDL) courses and will be useful for those studying for SQE1 – the book features assessment-level MCQs to reflect the format of the SQE. This is an engaging and accessible book which brings the practical and sometimes complex aspects of tort law to life with clarity and precision. The book is ideal for students who want a depth of knowledge combined with immediacy.

This new edition has been updated to include cases on the following topics:

psychiatric harm and secondary victims (Paul v Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust)

remoteness and burden of proof (Armstead v Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company Ltd)

contributory negligence and intoxication (Campbell v Advantage Insurance Co Ltd)

product liability and defects (Hastings v Finsbury Orthopaedics Ltd)

duty of care under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984 (Ovu v London Underground Ltd)

the scope of private nuisance (Fearn v Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery)
